Brett Jones, 'GoldenEye 007' Designer, passes away

Former Rare member Brett Jones (also credited as "B Jones") has died. He was a key member of the development team of GOLDENEYE 007, the Nintendo 64 video game adaptation of Pierce Brosnan's James Bond film debut. Credited as the game's "Costume Designer" during the end credits, which mimicked those of a movie, Jones designed concept art and renders for the Nintendo Players' Choice title, among other things that included texturing and animation.

Taking his work very seriously, Jones visited the GOLDENEYE sets at Leavesden studios in 1995. He took photographs of the character costumes designed by Lindy Hemming, from Bond's tuxedo to Boris flower-pattern Hawaiian shirt, to adapt them into the polygonal in-game models.

The news was announced on Wednesday (July 17) by David Doak on X: "RIP Brett Jones - you absolute legend. With your sneaky BJ gates," he wrote, posting a picture of the gates at the Statue Park level, bearing his initials.

GOLDENEYE 007 tournament champion Graslu00 has also sent his condolences, posting an image of their meeting: "Heartbroken at the news of Brett Jones' passing. His work in GOLDENEYE, PERFECT DARK and tons other media touched millions world-wide. I hold great memories of meting Brett at Cambridge and London in 2022, my heart goes to his family and friends. Thank you for everything, BJ." Through the account of GOLDENERA, the 2022 documentary accounting the making of the game, the filmmakers also named Jones "perhaps the most charismatic of all the folks we met."

After GOLDENEYE 007, Jones went on working with Rare on PERFECT DARK, helping in the creation of the leading character Joanna Dark as well. After leaving Rare, he worked on the visual effects of productions like DR WHO, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, FAST & FURIOUS 6 and the animated comedy SIR BILLY, which featured the voices of Sean Connery and Alan Cumming.

We send our deepest condolences to Brett's family and friends.
