The entertaing playability of GOLDENEYE 007 has inspired a big number of freelance designers and developers to create their own versions of the game or inspired on the game to recapture the feeling of the original in these modern days. Let's take a look at some of these fantastic freeware projects.

GOLDENEYE: SOURCE is a mod, or a convertion, of Valve's HALF LIFE into the famous Multiplayer mode of GOLDENEYE 007 for Nintendo 64. The development for this game began in 2005 by Nicholas "Nickster" Bishop and with an alpha version of this game released on December 26 of that year. After Bishop's premature death in 2006, many beta versions of the game were released until the first official version came on December 10, 2010. The team continued to release new versions of the mod with updates in playability, characters and maps. The latest update is the 5.0 version, released on August 12, 2016.

This mod faithfully recreates the maps from the single player and multiplayer modes of the game, such as Facility, Archives, Complex, Egyptian and Basement. Future releases would include Aztec, Dam, Cradle and Casino (inspired by the 2006 film version of CASINO ROYALE). The soundtrack was composed by Trent "Basstronix" Robertson, Greg "Sole Signal" Michalec and also Yannick "GoldenZen" Zenhäusern, the latter making tracks heavily influenced by Eric Serra's score for the 1995 film.

Additional maps made by fans or outside developers can also be downloaded, some include versions of the already known scenarios that are more developed, being closer to the film than to the minimalistic versions of the Nintendo 64 game. The players can adopt characters like James Bond, Alec Trevelyan, General Ourumov, a Russian soldier and a female Scientist, plus the classic 007 universe characters Oddjob, Baron Samedi and Jaws. None of them have the likeness of the actors who played those characters, but they bear a slight resemblance to them.
