Daily Express and The Sun reporter Garth Pearce has sadly passed away on February 5, after battling a cancer for three weeks. His vast trajectory and 50-year career includes two officially-sanctioned James Bond books: THE MAKING OF GOLDENEYE and THE MAKING OF TOMORROW NEVER DIES, both published by Boxtree in 1995 and 1997, and containing several interviews with the cast and crew of Pierce Brosnan's first two James Bond films.
Pearce began his career at 18, writing for a weekly publication in Walsall, Staffordshire, and later worked for other regional titles like the Western Morning News. In 1973, at the age of 25, he joined the Daily Express and quickly advanced to the role of showbiz editor. He was the only journalist to visit the STAR WARS set in 1976, as many mistakenly predicted the film would fail, and The Sun's Mike Ridley stated he "was the only journalist Sean Connery ever trusted." His showbiz articles include the first interviews with stars such as Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lopez, Brad Pitt, and Gwyneth Paltrow.
“I’ve lived the life of a celebrity without having the misfortune of being one,” Pearce joked about his career. The journalist is survived by his wife Davina and his daughters Dulcie and Gemma.
From THE GOLDENEYE DOSSIER we send our big condolences to the family, and we'd like to thank Pearce for his incredible eye to detail to immortalize the experiences lived by a new Bond in the set of his first Bond film. It is thanks to the THE MAKING OF GOLDENEYE that we have quotes from stars like Gottfried John and Tcheky Karyo talking of their characters. Needless to say, this book has been a major source when it came to pen THE WORLD OF GOLDENEYE some six years ago. Rest in Peace, Garth, and thank you for your great contributions to the world of 007.
