ProjectMidas is Out – Play 'GoldenEye 007' Natively on PC

Developed by Murk17 and AXDOOMER and based on kholdfuzion's decompilation, ProjectMidas was released yesterday. This program lets you play the N64 version of GOLDENEYE 007 natively on Windows and Linux (with a Mac version coming soon). It also greatly improves the experience compared to using emulators, which often required a lot of fiddling with graphics plugins and other settings to get the game running properly. On lower-end PCs, this could mean significant slowdowns in outdoor levels (Dam, Runway, etc.) when using the most accurate plugins, or missing textures when using plugins better suited to less powerful hardware.

Fortunately, none of these issues seem to occur with ProjectMidas. All you have to do is download the .zip file from GitHub, extract its contents, and place your GOLDENEYE 007 ROM file in a specific folder (the US version is currently supported, but future updates will add support for the EU and JP versions). Then, just run the .exe file, and you're good to go. You can adjust video, audio, and various other settings through the in-game menu. The game supports both mouse and keyboard controls and controllers, as well as four-player split-screen multiplayer, provided you and your friends can figure out how to use separate controllers or configure the keyboard for shared use. Future updates are also expected to bring online multiplayer.

The multiplayer mode also includes a couple of interesting additions. For example, you can choose between different versions of Bond (suit, jungle outfit, tuxedo, parka, and black jacket), Natalya (blue sweater and skirt or jungle outfit) and Trevelyan ("006" and "Janus" versions, the facial scars and outfits make the difference). The Cradle and Statue multiplayer maps have also been added, as they were originally intended to be in the N64 game.

As we approach the 30th anniversary of the game that made James Bond a household name among video game fans and revolutionized the first-person shooter genre, this is indeed great news and a wonderful gift from the GoldenEye modding community to all of us. If you have any feedback, feel free to contact the developers through their official Discord server.
