The success of GOLDENEYE is the result of many talented professionals who delivered their best to make the 17th James Bond adventure not only one of the most solid flicks for the franchise, but a product that ensured the definitive return of the popular superspy to the big screen. Take a look at the life and career of these people.
Martin Campbell DIRECTOR
When it comes to delivering thrills on the big screen, Martin Campbell is a man of action. Born on October 24, 1943, in Hastings, New Zealand, Campbell moved to London in 1966, where he began his career as a cameraman. In 1973 he made his directorial debut with the erotic comedy THE SEX THIEF, later followed by ESKIMO NELL in 1975. By the end of the decade, he worked as an associate producer on SCUM (1979), directed by Alan Clarke. In the 1980s he worked as a TV director, getting a taste of action in episodes of the series THE PROFESSIONALS and REILLY: ACE OF SPIES (1983). He would leap to success with BBC's miniseries EDGE OF DARKNESS in 1985, starring Bob Peck and Joe Don Baker. Between the late 1980s and early 1990s, Campbell's directorial career would focus on crime thrillers such as CRIMINAL LAW (1988) and DEFENSELESS (1992), plus the sci-fi movie NO ESCAPE, starring Ray Liotta, which would attract the attention of James Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, who hired him to helm GOLDENEYE. After declining to do every other Brosnan Bond film, he would finally return for Daniel Craig's 007 debut in CASINO ROYALE, released in 2006. By that time, he also masterfully resurrected the popular Zorro character with the movies THE MASK OF ZORRO (1998) and THE LEGEND OF ZORRO (2005). Recently, Campbell worked on a cinematic adaptation of EDGE OF DARKNESS in 2010, starring Mel Gibson, also directing GREEN LANTERN (2011) and THE FOREIGNER (2017), reunited with Pierce Brosnan. Recently, he has directed THE PROTÉGÉ (2021), starring Maggie Q, Michael Keaton and Samuel L. Jackson.
Michael G. Wilson
& Barbara Broccoli PRODUCERS
Due to poor health, noted Italian-American producer Albert R. "Cubby" Broccoli, the man behind every James Bond film since 1962, delegated the production of the 17th James Bond film to his daughter Barbara and his stepson Michael G. Wilson. Since then, the duo have been taking the task of updating Ian Fleming's character to the 21st century. Wilson has been co-producing the James Bond films since 1979 with MOONRAKER, starring Roger Moore, while Broccoli began acting as associate producer with Timothy Dalton's 007 debut in THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS, released in 1987. After the passing of Cubby in 1996, the duo went on producing all the following Bond films to date starring Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig. In 2014, they were awarded the Producers Guild of America. They most recent projects outside James Bond were the big screen drama FILM STARS DON'T DIE IN LIVERPOOL (2017) and the spy thriller THE RHYTHM SECTION (2020). Their upcoming film, the 25th James Bond adventure NO TIME TO DIE, is set to be released in 2021.
Bruce Feirstein SCREENWRITER
GOLDENEYE was the first of the three James Bond movies penned by American screenwriter, author and journalist Bruce Feirstein. He attended the College of Communications at Boston University, where he served as the editor-in-chief of the student newspaper, The Daily Free Press. After graduation, he went to work as an advertising copywriter, winning multiple Clio awards and One Show Gold Pencils for his work on political campaigns, along with ads for BMW and Sony. Returning to his roots in journalism, he began writing for New York Magazine, the New Yorker, the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal, as well as writing editorials for the New York Times, and serving as a contributing editor at Spy magazine and Vanity Fair. He also wrote the Ace-Award nominated HBO play THE BEST LEGS IN THE EIGHTH GRADE and began producing movies in China, including the award-winning HONG HE. After GOLDENEYE, he worked on scripts for the Pierce Brosnan Bond movies TOMORROW NEVER DIES (1997) and THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH (1999), along with the 007 videogames 007 EVERYTHING OR NOTHING (2003), FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE (2005), BLOOD STONE (2010) and the remake of GOLDENEYE 007 for Activision in 2010. His last association with James Bond so far was the 2012 videogame 007 LEGENDS, also for Activision.
Jeffrey Caine SCREENWRITER
Born in 1944 in London, Jeffrey Caine was one of the authors who reworked Michael France's original story for GOLDENEYE. Caine taught English in schools and colleges before becoming a professional writer, mainly for British television shows between 1986 and 1992, notably the series THE CHIEF, which ran for five seasons. After his work on GOLDENEYE, Caine worked in the movie industry with films like INSIDE I'M DANCING (2004) and the drama THE CONSTANT GARDENER (2005), starring Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz, for which he won an Academy Award. Recently, he wrote the screenplay for Ridley Scott's EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS (2014) and is currently working on THE SONG OF NAMES, starring Clive Owen and Saul Rubiniek.
Michael France STORY
Michael France was the man who came up with the great story behind GOLDENEYE. Born on January 4, 1962, in St. Petersburg, Florida, France developed a penchant for comics and movies. He attended the University of Florida in the 1980s and worked as a projectionist in a small movie theatre in Gainesville. An avid James Bond fan, he wrote the in-house fanzine "Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" earlier in his life. After moving to Los Angeles he became a screenwriter, his debut being the one of the 1993 action film CLIFFHANGER, starring Sylvester Stallone. In the early 1990s, when Timothy Dalton was still James Bond, France was hired to come up with a story for the upcoming 007 movie then codenamed "Bond 17". Altough many things were later adapted for Brosnan's Bond, the basis of the argument (the rivalry between 007 and 006) was mantained, as well as the Russian settings. Some moments of his script that were discarded from GOLDENEYE would be used again in 1999s THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH. In the 2000 decade, France wrote scripts for HULK (2003), THE PUNISHER (2004) and FANTASTIC FOUR (2005), before buying the Beach Theater in St. Petersburg, where independent and foreign films were regularly screened. On April 12, 2013, France passed away aged 51 after enduringan extended illness caused by his diabetes.
Peter Lamont PRODUCTION DESIGNER
Veteran James Bond production designer Peter Lamont undertook a major task when he was asked to turn an abandoned Rolls Royce factory into the film studio of GOLDENEYE when every other studio was busy or couldn't house the production of the film. Lamont was born in 1929 and has worked on every 007 film since 1964's GOLDFINGER up until CASINO ROYALE in 2006, with the exception of TOMORROW NEVER DIES in 1997. He was nominated to four Academy Awards for his work in films like FIDDLER ON THE ROOF (1971), THE SPY WHO LOVED ME (1977) and ALIENS (1986). He finally won this award for recreating the interiors of the ill-fated ship on James Cameron's TITANIC in 1997. Other credits include CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG (1968), EVE OF DESTRUCTION (1991) and TRUE LIES (1994). Lamont died on December 18, 2020, aged 91.
Phil Méheux, BSC DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY
Born on September 17, 1941, British cinematographer Phil Méheux made many films as a teenager, beginning his professional career with the BBC Television Film Unit and shortly afterwards becoming a cameraman on TV plays and documentaries. His first cinematic feature was in Anthony Simmons' film BLACK JOY in 1977. Later, Méheux worked in thrillers like THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY (1980) and THE FOURTH PROTOCOL (1987), both with Pierce Brosnan in their cast. His first collaboration with director Martin Campbell was in 1988's CRIMINAL LAW, starring Kevin Bacon and Gary Oldman. He would collaborate with the GOLDENEYE director in his films for over 20 years, including NO ESCAPE, THE MASK OF ZORRO, BEYOND BORDERS, the movie version of EDGE OF DARKNESS and, notably, the 2006 James Bond adventure CASINO ROYALE. Méheux is a member of the British Society of Cinematographers since 1979 and his last big feature known worldwide was the animation film THE SPONGEBOB MOVIE: SPONGE OUT OF WATER.
Terry Rawlings EDITOR
Born in London in 1933, Terry Rawlings was a founding member of the Guild of British Film and Television Editors in 1966, back in the day where he worked as a sound editor. After 1977 he worked primarily as a film editor, earning several BAFTA nominations as well as an Academy Award nomination for the highly acclaimed film CHARIOTS OF FIRE in 1981. Other credits include 1979's ALIEN and the sci-hit film BLADE RUNNER (1982). He also worked in the Roger Moore film BULLSEYE! (1990) and with director Martin Campbell in NO ESCAPE (1994). When Campbell put him in charge of the editing of GOLDENEYE, Rawlings became the first editor to get his name in the credits for a James Bond poster, something he pushed for given his talent - and the onscreen result proves that he truly deserved it. Recent films edited by Terry Rawlings include the film adaptation of TV's THE SAINT (1997), Sean Connery's heist adventure ENTRAPMENT (1999) and THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA in 2004. He passed away on April 23, 2019, at the age of 86.
Lindy Hemming COSTUME DESIGNER
GOLDENEYE was the first of five films with Welsh-born Lindy Hemming working on the costume design department of the James Bond franchise, starring Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig. Born in August 21, 1948, Hemming designed costumes for productions at West End theatres, the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal National Theatre, after studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. She gave a modern and somewhat fashionista look to Pierce Brosnan's new 007 making him dress in the finest Brioni suits, a look that was more inclined to Roger Moore's rather colorful suit combinations over Sean Connery's more discreet wardrobe. Her last participation to date in the 007 franchise was in CASINO ROYALE (2006), after which she worked in movies like EDGE OF DARKNESS (2010), THE DARK KNIGHT RISES (2012), and more recently she designed the wardrobe for 2017's WONDER WOMAN, giving Diana Prince's famous combat outfit a modern look to fit Gal Gadot's appaerance in the present day.
Eric Serra COMPOSER
Born on September 9, 1959, Eric Serra was exposed to the world of music from a very early age, given that his father was a famous French songwriter in the late 1950s. In the 1980s, Serra met director Luc Besson and became the predilect composer for his movies, notably LE DERNIER COMBAT (1983), SUBWAY (1985), LE GRAND BLEU (1988) and NIKITA (1990). Offered to compose GOLDENEYE, Serra opted to break the commonly known James Bond music structure and opted for an industrial and modern feeling for the soundtrack that would fit the first post Cold-War era 007 cinematic adventure. At the same time, and taking inspiration from his work on LÉON: THE PROFESSIONAL (1993), Serra also wrote and performed the end title song of the film. Other Eric Serra credits include THE FIFTH ELEMENT (1997), BANDIDAS (2006), and LUCY (2014), starring Scarlett Johansson. Recently he composed another two movies produced or directed by Luc Besson: RENEGADES (2017) and ANNA (2019).
Tina Turner TITLE SONG PERFORMER
American singer Anna Mae Bullock, better known as Tina Turner, was already known as the "Queen of Rock" when she performed the explosive and haunting main title song for GOLDENEYE, which for many fans is a welcome tribute to Shirley Bassey's three contributions to the 007 songbook in the series. Tina's career began in the 1950s, performing with his husband Ike Turner and forming the band Ike & Tina Turner in 1960. In 1984, her album "Private Dancer" became a worldwide success which would last well into the 1980s and 1990s with four Grammy Awards. She also appeared in the 1975 musical TOMMY, the action film MAD MAX BEYOND THUNDERDOME (1985) and had a cameo role in the 1993 film LAST ACTION HERO, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. She made her last tour in 2008 to celebrate her 50th anniversary as a singer, a tour which included the GOLDENEYE main title song mixed with a James Bond Theme tango routine. She initially retired in 2013, but came out of retirement to work in a musical based on her life in 2018. The talented singer passed away at her residence in Switzerland on May 24, 2023, after enduring a long illness.
